How Medigap switching works in New Mexico

In New Mexico, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans use standard medical underwriting outside your protected windows. That means the best time to enroll is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the month you are both 65 and enrolled in Part B. During that window, carriers must accept you regardless of health history. After it closes, switching plans usually means answering health questions, and approval is not guaranteed.

Pinnacle Insurance Advisors is licensed in New Mexico. Our independent advisors compare Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D options available where you live, explain the trade-offs in plain English, and help you enroll, all at no cost to you. Most New Mexico clients work with us entirely by phone.

New Mexico has enacted an annual Medigap open enrollment law, but it has not started yet. Senate Bill 21, passed in 2026, creates a yearly window that begins on the first day of your birthday month and stays open for at least 60 days, for any Medicare supplement policy of equal or lesser value, with guaranteed issuance. Those provisions take effect on January 1, 2027, so standard underwriting still applies until then.

State rules change. We confirm the current rules before any application, and Medicare.gov is the official federal resource.
