How Medigap switching works in Louisiana
Louisiana has a Medigap birthday rule. Once a year, around your birthday, you can switch to another Medigap plan with equal or lesser benefits without answering health questions. The exact window length and rules are set by state regulators, so the details matter. Outside that window, and outside your original six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, standard medical underwriting usually applies.
Pinnacle Insurance Advisors is licensed in Louisiana. Our independent advisors compare Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D options available where you live, explain the trade-offs in plain English, and help you enroll, all at no cost to you. Most Louisiana clients work with us entirely by phone.
Louisiana's rule is written into state law at R.S. 22:1112. If you have an existing Medicare supplement policy at the time of your birthday, you get an annual open enrollment period commencing with your birthday and lasting 63 calendar days, during which you may purchase any Medicare supplement policy offered by the same issuer or an affiliate authorized in the state.
State rules change. We confirm the current rules before any application, and Medicare.gov is the official federal resource.
New to Medigap? Start with how Medicare Supplement plans work, including the two most popular choices, Plan G and Plan N.
