How Medigap switching works in Illinois
Illinois has a Medigap birthday rule. Once a year, around your birthday, you can switch to another Medigap plan with equal or lesser benefits without answering health questions. The exact window length and rules are set by state regulators, so the details matter. Outside that window, and outside your original six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, standard medical underwriting usually applies.
Pinnacle Insurance Advisors is licensed in Illinois. Our independent advisors compare Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Part D options available where you live, explain the trade-offs in plain English, and help you enroll, all at no cost to you. Most Illinois clients work with us entirely by phone.
Illinois ties its rule to age as well as your birthday. If you are at least 65 and no more than 75 with an existing Medicare supplement policy, you get an annual open enrollment period of 45 days starting on your birthday, and it applies to plans from your current issuer with benefits equal to or lesser than your existing coverage.
State rules change. We confirm the current rules before any application, and Medicare.gov is the official federal resource.
